Privacy Policy — Owed

Owed helps you search publicly available U.S. state unclaimed-property records for money that may belong to you. Owed is not affiliated with any government agency.

This policy describes what the app actually does. Where it says we do not collect something, that is because the app has no code that collects it.

What you send us, and what happens to it

Search inputs. The first and last name, U.S. state, and optional city you type to run a search. These are sent to our search service, used that moment to look up records, and discarded. We do not store them. Because they are never retained, they are not "collected" under Apple's App Store definition, which is why they do not appear on our App Store privacy label. Searches are anonymous: there is no account, no identifier attached to a search, and no search history. The name is sent in the body of the request rather than in the web address, so it does not end up in ordinary server logs, and the response is marked never to be cached. Our host records the usual technical details of a request — the time and the IP address it came from — but nothing that ties one to a name.

Purchase status. If you subscribe, Apple processes the payment and RevenueCat tells us whether your subscription is active. We never receive your card, bank, or Apple ID details.

What stays only on your phone

Saved names. If you save names to the Watching screen, they are stored on your device and nowhere else. They are not uploaded, not backed up to us, and not visible to us. Deleting a name, or deleting the app, removes them.

Because those names never leave your phone, we cannot search on your behalf while the app is closed. What the subscription provides is a weekly reminder, scheduled locally on your device, and one-tap re-checking. The app says this on the Watching screen too.

What we do not collect

No account. No email address. No Social Security number. No bank details. No government ID. No passwords. No contacts, photos, or location.

The app contains no analytics or tracking service of any kind. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated before it does, and the App Store privacy labels will be updated with it.

Our website is different, and we'd rather say so. getowed.app uses PostHog to count visits and to see which link brought someone here, so we know whether the people we work with are actually reaching anyone. It records pages viewed and the campaign tag in the link — not your name, not anything you search for, and it never follows you to other websites. None of this happens inside the app.

Where results come from

Search results come from official state unclaimed-property records that the state itself publishes — for California, the State Controller's public bulk file, which is refreshed weekly.

California publishes that file split by value, and we currently hold the bands covering $100 and above. Records below $100 exist and we do not have them yet, so an empty result from Owed does not mean the state holds nothing for you. The state's own search is free and covers everything; we link to it on every result.

Our copy is a snapshot, so it can lag the state. Property that has already been returned to its owner disappears from the state's file but may still appear in our copy until the next refresh. Every result shows the date of the snapshot it came from. A result is not proof that money is owed to you, and any amount shown is what the state reported, not a promise.

Who we share data with

• Apple — processes payments.
• RevenueCat — manages subscription status.
• Vercel — hosts our search service, so it handles the search you type in order to answer it. Searches are not stored.
• Neon — hosts the database of published state records we search.
• Expo — delivers app updates. The app checks for one on launch, which tells Expo an anonymous install of Owed is running. No name or search is involved.
• PostHog — counts visits to our website only. Nothing from inside the app reaches it.

That is the complete list. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.

Your rights

Because we do not store your searches and your saved names never leave your device, there is generally nothing held about you for us to return or delete. Saved names are removed by deleting them in the app or removing the app.

If you believe we hold data about you and want it deleted, email support@getowed.app. Depending on where you live — for example California residents under the CCPA — you may have additional rights to access or delete personal information.

Children

Owed is not directed to anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.

Owed is operated by Tran Ngoc Hien. Claiming unclaimed property is always free directly through your state's official program, and we never take a percentage of anything you claim.
